Objective£ºThe purpose of this study was to investigate the association between Insertion/Deletion(I/D) polymorphism of Angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) gene and schizophrenia in Korean and Han Chinese population.
Method£ºWe examined the frequency of a polymophism characterized by the insertion of a 287bp in intron 16 of the ACE gene(located on chromosome 17q23). A sample of 153 Korean schizophrenics, 154 Korean healthy controls, 82 Han Chinese schizophrenics and 88 Han Chinese healthy controls were genotyped by size-analysis of polymerase chain reaction products.
Results£ºThere was significant difference in genotype frequencies and allelic frequencies of ACE I/D polymorphism between Korean schizophrenics and controls. There was no difference in genotype frequencies and allelic frequencies of ACE I/D polymorphism between Han Chinese schizophrenics and controls. There was significant difference in genotype frequencies and allelic frequencies of ACE I/D polymorphism between the Korean and Han Chinese controls.
Conclusion£ºThe present study reveals significant association of ACE gene I/D polymorphism in Korean schizophrenics. And there was ethnic diffence between the Korean and Han Chinese polulation.
